Basketball
Coaching school and church teams, playing in local leagues, organizing and running camps, skills demonstrations, and playing at local parks are many of the ways that we use basketball to minister in Hong Kong. The young people are very excited to play basketball and learn the newest tricks and methods.
Teaching fundamentals and teamwork as well as just enjoying playing with them are great ways to help them improve their skills and realize there is more to this game and life than meets the eye. It's very fun and rewarding to be able to get to know the youth and be able to speak into their lives as a coach, mentor, and friend.
Hot Hoops Basketball Camp is the biggest event of the year for SSI. It is a five-day camp held annually at the end of July or beginning of August for boys and girls age 10-19. The camp usually attracts around 100 participants and is staffed by SOS volunteers as well as local basketball players and coaches. Camp curriculum combines basketball training and competitions with discussion groups and testimonies. Over the years, hundreds of young people have received the Lord or re-committed their lives to God during Hot Hoops.
